Remembering Their Names: South Africa's Call to Action Against Gender-Based Violence

In his heartfelt Address to the Nation on September 29, 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa brought urgent attention to the tragic realities of femicide and gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.
By honoring victims like Busisiwe Mahlangu, Itumeleng Kekana, Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, and Jabulile Ntimba, the President poured out his sorrow for those lost and called for a united stand against the violence plaguing our communities. Behind every name is a story that deserves justice and remembrance. We honor not only the lives lost in the Ekurhuleni area, but multiple innocent lives cut short across the length and breadth of Mzansi—including young Octavia Swarts, a bright 10-year-old from Kraaifontein, and Nomakhwezi Zitha from Delft.
Right now, South Africa is enveloped in prayer and unity, seeking solace for the grieving families. To combat this scourge, the President has rolled out a decisive four-point action plan:
• 90-Day Case Recovery Operation: The Acting Police Minister and Justice Minister must launch a national operation within 90 days, providing regular progress updates.
• Forensic and DNA Backlog Strategy: A strategy to clear forensic backlogs is due in just 60 days to ensure timely justice.
• Infrastructure Safety Fixes: Local authorities are mandated to fix infrastructure risks, such as broken streetlights and unsafe public parks.
• Alcohol-Related Violence Crackdown: Stricter rules will be enforced on liquor outlets, targeting illegal shebeens, tightening operating hours, and enforcing safety measures.
It is all hands on deck to create a safer environment for everyone. At Media24seven, we have created a moving tribute video that gives you a deeper look into the President's powerful plea for change.
